I have started to mentally name my compost pile, which is what humans do. It might be kin making but it is also something we as a family have always done, we anthropomorphise everything around us, the cars are called Lexy and Bluebell, the robot hoover is called Robert, the mouse the cat brought in was called Tung (as in, Mousy Tung).

The small compost bin in the kitchen responsible for bokashi will be Alethea so I am covered on both Latin and Greek fronts. I like giving them names, especially feminine appellations, they seem closer than functional bodies, living entities, partners, friends, someone I can chat to or maybe when I’ve completely lost it I will start singing to her.

Naming of things that aren’t literally live - in this case of living form - is a simple urge to make familiar or kin and whilst I am being flippant and whilst also anthropomorphism is exactly what I am moving away from, the gesture is compassionate and kind, in the truest sense. It treats the appellant as loved, seen, speaker of truth and of being exactly the very thing it is.

I have been in conversational mode with Verity and Alethea for a while now and the partnership feels consolidated. The drawings we are making together are collaborative and I feel in good hands.
