Village Hall

I booked the local village hall and I went this morning to work on one of the long drawings. It was wonderful. Huge, clean and light. For £8 for two hours I felt it was a really great way for me to work freely on this large project, as I just don’t have that kind of space at home, particularly with children and animals… This project is emerging as a triptych of three 10x1.5metre drawings. They may not all work out and I won’t stress myself if I don’t end up with 30 metres of drawing. The best will be offered as a submission, one for the final show, possibly the third as the rambling mycelium assemblage, which I would then cut up. All ideas at the moment and subject to lots of change I should imagine. In the meantime the hall is a great solution for this project and will be fab for future in person workshops.

The windows are dated but ideal for tracing paper installations. The bars will show through but that’s hardly worth getting too upset about. I can also make the whole hall completely dark, which will facilitate phosphorescent photography (I think!). I have booked 3 hours every Friday until 20th June, which I was hoping to use for photography. Availability is plentiful so I can book more, budget permitting.

I have ordered seven more graphite blocks, which I hope will be enough. I will also have to address the edges as they are just too straight - I am wondering about using a self healing matt and a sharp craft knife to cut out the lines to suggest three dimensionality and allow the light in from behind. It would become paper lace in a different way… Would I have time? I love the idea of a light source from behind, maybe I just face it head on and put fairy lights on the back….

I don’t know how to photograph a 10m drawing all at once - I did a pano shot but that doesn’t pick up any detail. I could get my family to hold it up and photograph it from a distance with a wide angle lens. I know nothing about this stuff but I will have to learn.
